Image Description:

Illustration showing bacteria on a tooth that can lead to dental problems, including tooth decay. Some bacteria found in the mouth are harmless or even helpful, preventing bad breath and aiding digestion. Other bacteria can lead to diseases such as periodontal disease and tooth decay. Benign or helpful bacteria are called gram positive aerobic bacteria, harmful bacteria are called gram negative anaerobic bacteria. Good oral hygiene – brushing teeth, flossing and using mouthwash can help prevent the build-up of harmful bacteria into plaque. If plaque builds up over time it becomes tartar, which helps bacteria attack the bone and ligaments surrounding the tooth.
