Important hormones involved in this process are follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone. FSH stimulates the ovarian follicles to mature, LH causes an egg to be released, oestrogen helps the egg to mature and also aids the lining of the uterus, progesterone helps to balance the effect of the oestrogen and the ovaries produce a surge of testosterone at the time of ovulation.
