Image Description:

Labelled illustration of polyp in the stomach, also known as a gastric polyp.

A polyp is a mass of cells that cluster together. A stomach polyp is a polyp that has formed on the lining of the stomach, usually in response to damage to the lining. Most polyps do not cause any symptoms and are benign and are usually only discovered during investigations for unrelated issues. Occasionally a polyp can increase the chances of developing stomach cancer later on, and in these cases it is usual for the polyp to be removed. If the polyp becomes large, then ulcers can develop leading to pain, nausea and blood in stool.
