Image Description:

Anatomy and Blood Flow in the Hepatojugular Reflux

The illustration shows the Hepatojugular Reflux (HJR) which is a physical examination used to detect right-sided heart failure and elevated central venous pressure. It is caused by the temporary mechanical compression of the liver by applying pressure with a hand which displaces splanchnic blood into the inferior vena cava, forcing blood backward into the neck veins.
