Image Description:

Illustration of bronchioles, the tiny airways that carry oxygen to the alveoli in the lungs. They are part of the conduction zone of the respiratory system. There are three types of bronchioles: lobular, terminal and respiratory. Bronchioles are lined with muscular walls and are about 0.5 to 1mm in diameter. They control the amount of air distributed in the lungs by constricting and dilating. Bronchioles, which lack any supporting cartilage, are particularly affected by conditions that cause constriction or obstruction of the airways. Conditions affecting the bronchioles include bronchiolitis and asthma.
