Bruxism
Image Description:
Illustration of bruxism, commonly known as teeth grinding. The condition can cause other symptoms, such as facial pain, headaches, earaches, and extreme cases can result in the wearing down of teeth. Bruxism can often be caused by anxiety and stress – 70% of sleep bruxism (grinding of teeth whilst asleep) is thought to be caused by psychological factors such as stress. It can also be triggered by some antidepressants, particularly SSRIs and is more likely to occur in people who drink heavily, smoke and take recreational drugs.
Treatment depends on the underlying cause, in some cases behavioural therapy can help to reduce stress and anxiety resulting in relief from symptoms. In cases where the underlying condition cannot be easily or effectively controlled, using mouth guards or mouth splints is recommended.
