Image Description:

The illustration demonstrates the placement of a stent within the oesophagus. The stent is to be placed where the tumour is located, in order to make it easier for swallowing as it helps alleviate the blockage in the oesophagus. In order to correctly place the stent the surgeon will use a guidewire to lower the unopened stent into the oesophagus. The stent is made of a hollow flexible mesh and as it opens it pushes the blockage against the walls of the oesophagus creating an opening.
