There are 8 cervical nerves, 12 thoracic nerves, 5 lumbar nerves, 5 sacral nerves and 1 coccygeal nerve. The spinal cord, contains neurons that carry sensory information from the body to the central nervous system, allowing for processing of the information received and also carry information from the head to the central nervous system, allowing motor functions to be performed. Any damage to the spinal cord can result in loss of sensory and/or motor function below the level of injury.
