Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or (GERD) or acid reflux occurs in the lower esophageal sphincter located between the esophagus and stomach. Gastroesophageal reflux is the return of the stomach's contents back up into the esophagus which is the acidified liquid content of the stomach. Due to changes in the esophageal sphincter that usually holds down the stomach contents. The GERD condition may damage the lining of the esophagus due to the acidified liquid. This process is indicated by yellow with an arrow showing the direction of the liquid content entering the esophagus. Other terms for the condition are Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), gastric reflux disease, acid reflux disease, or reflux.
