Image Description:

Esophageal spasm is shown as contractions of the esophagus. These spasms are abnormal contractions of the muscles in the esophagus (the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach). These spasms do not move food effectively to the stomach and so can prevent food from reaching the stomach and food can get stuck in the esophagus. This condition may be called diffuse esophageal spasm, or DES.
