Liver, Stomach, Pancreas, Spleen Anatomy
Image Description:
Labelled illustration of the liver, stomach, pancreas and spleen.
The pancreas is part of the digestive and endocrine system. In the digestive system, it produces enzymes that digest proteins, carbohydrates and break down fats. In the endocrine system, it creates and releases hormones, including insulin and glucagon, which lower and raise blood sugar levels, respectively. The spleen is part of the lymphatic system, helping to filter blood and also producing white blood cells, an important component of the immune system. The liver, the largest organ of the body, is where sugar and fats are stored, proteins and bile is produced, and harmful substances such as drugs and alcohol are broken down so they can be excreted from the body.
