Image Description:

Anatomical Change of a Barrel Chest versus Normal Chest

The chest area may change shape to resemble a barrel, and the shape of the diaphragm, a key muscle for moving air in and an out of the lungs, will also change, hence its called barrel chest. Barrel chest is an anatomical anomaly where the chest becomes permanently rounded and enlarged, resembling a beer barrel. While a normal chest is elliptical (broader than it is deep), a barrel chest is nearly as deep as it is wide.
