Image Description:

Illustration showing a lung biopsy procedure. A biopsy through the skin, commonly known as a percutaneous lung biopsy is performed in cases of lung tumour to test for abnormal or cancerous cells. A thin needle is inserted through the chest and into the lung in the area of the tumour. The procedure is usually done under local anaethetic. For tumours in areas difficult to access a surgical biopsy under general anaethetic, involving opening the lungs to gain access may be necessary.
