Blepharospasm

Illustration showing blepharospasm, commonly known as dystonia. Blepharospasm is an uncontrollable and often painful muscle contraction around the eye, resulting in the involuntary closing of the eyelids. It is a neurological condition, thought to be caused by abnormal function of the basal ganglia, and can be hereditary. There is no cure but the symptoms can be reduced by using medication, by an injection of the neurotoxin botulinum (botox) or surgery.
