Bone Metabolism (Remodelling) Diagram
Image Description:
Bone metabolism is the constant process where new bone tissue is being formed and mature bone tissue is removed. This process also occurs when replacing injured bone. Bone tissue is removed by osteoclasts and new bone tissue is formed by osteoblasts. In the first year of life, almost 100% of the skeleton is replaced. In adults, remodelling proceeds at about 10% per year.
