Image Description:

Illustration showing a hemifacial spasm, which causes the muscles on one side of the face to contract. Cases can be mild or severe. Severe cases can interfere with vision in the eye on the side of the face affected. The causes of hemifacial spasm are not known with any certainty, but it is thought that irritation of the facial nerve may be involved. There is no cure, but symptoms can be controlled with botulinum toxin (botox) injections, surgery or use of drugs.
