The adult spine consists of 26 bones – 24 vertebrae and the sacrum and coccyx. The vertebrae are divided into three regions – cervical, thoracic or lumbar – and their name contains the first letter of their region. The skull consists of 22 bones and protects the soft tissue of the head, including the brain and eyes and supports facial structures.
