Illustration of an ischiorectal abscess, a form of anorectal abscess. Anorectal abscesses can be caused by infection of an anal fissure, sexually transmitted infections or blocked glands. Ischiorectal abscesses account for about one fifth of all anorectal abscesses and are caused by extension of sepsis through the external sphincter into the ischiorectal space.
